If you sit back and look at this, as I have have with my
learned colleagues Monsieurs Stella and Artois, then you will realise that we
are adventurers bent on acheiving the same goal. Leonid will take his Trimble
and his skills and produce an Autocad model of a whole fortress in the blink of
an eye. Soviet, now known as Alexander Meerkat and his sidekick Sergie will
make sense of lots of old measurements and take some crucial new ones whilst
drinking vodka and admiring Ukraine's ability to produce very tall and
completely lovely ladies OR we could just all work together with a guy, who if
he works for Trimble should be a top-notch surveyor, and produce the definitive
plan of the site so all those lovely maps uploaded to the web might have some
real purpose other than occupying virtual space.

The new 2009 season is set to start in July and will last most of the month. We aim to complete a full detailed survey of the fortress using a combination of a Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS), a total station and scaled photographs.

Akkerman Geophysics Survey Report 2008

Following the successful deployment of electrical resistance survey in 2007 the geophysical surveys team continued in 2008 with two further prospection techniques, gradiometry and ground penetrating radar (GPR). The application of the two geophysical survey methodologies, in addition to the resistivity of 2007, would, it was hoped, provide a more holistic approach to the investigation of the sub-surface remains at Akkerman. Gradiometry was used over a total area of 0.8ha within both the Garrison Yard and the Civil Yards. A number of ephemeral rectilinear anomalies could be observed along the base of the northwest section of the Civil Yard and the buildings, revealed during the 2007 resistivity survey, were also evident.
